Sex Drive's Alice Greczyn

As Mary, the sweet Amish girl on Rumspringa in Sex Drive, opening this weekend, Alice Greczyn does something rarely seen in film by making Amish hot. While we don’t anticipate the teen-sex comedy to start a new Amish fashion trend, we found Sex Drive highly entertaining with its mix of crude sex humor, boobies, and charmingly awkward characters. We chatted with the 22-year old actress about Sex Drive, the Amish right of Rumspringa, and how you should ask her out.

Your character is Amish, how did you get into the role? Did you go live with the Amish for research?
I watched a documentary called the Devil’s Playground, The thing that my character is going through is called Rumspringa, where the Amish teenagers get to basically take a break from the Amish lifestyle and do whatever they want. It’s a very beautiful religion and way of life, but at the same time, there’s so many rules, so many harsh consequences for messing-up. In Sex Drive we show sort of the fun part of it—getting to be off the farm, getting to wear whatever you want, getting to have sex.

Have you ever had a little Rumspringa of your own and partied like the Amish?
Everyone when they grow up has there little period when they leave the house, they go to college and indulge in too many parties. I’ve had little bouts of it, but I never went full out. I’m the oldest of five children, and I’ve always had a very responsible concerned nature, and my conscious is too loud for me to ignore sometimes. The most I let myself go, I was doing a film in Ireland called Shrooms—I drank more than I ever have. That’s about it, I’m kind of boring. I don’t think I ever felt like I had to rebel.

The Amish dress usually isn’t flattering how did you make in cute?
It was very uncomfortable, actually. It gave me a big bad rash on my neck, because the dress comes up so high, I felt like it was choking me the whole time, and at night I’d have this bright red mark around my neck. I never really felt very sexy in that movie, I felt very cute. Whenever me and Clark [Duke] would have our scenes, it was just so lovey-dovey, mushy cute. It’s a nice break from having to be sexy. I’ve done roles where I’ve had to be sexy in moments, and it’s such a weird thing trying to be sexy. You are or you aren’t.

In Sex Drive, Ian drives all the way across the country to hook-up with a girl he met on the internet. What is the farthest a guy has gone for a date with you?
For a date with me? I’ve heard of a few contacting my agent or my publicist. I was like, ‘Really? You’re going to go that way?’ I’ve dated a guy who went to very great lengths to be with me. It’s very humbling to be that pursued and loved by someone.

Have you ever found love on the internet?
I’ve certainly heard of that happening. I’m a very in-person type of girl and I much prefer one-on-one or direct contact. I would never like to be asked out through text or through Myspace.

Not through text or Mypace? How do guys ask you out?
I hate when guys are like, ‘So, we should so go grab coffee sometime’. If you call them out and say ‘I’m not really dating’, they’re like, ‘I didn’t mean like that’. You absolutely meant it like that!

So how do you prefer to be asked out?
Just be very straight-forward with it—‘I really like you, Can we go to the beach sometime together? I’d love to take you out on a date’. Just something straight forward, no sneaking around. If you like me, just say you like me, and we’ll go from there.

The two main characters, Lance, the player, and Ian, the sensitive guy, are very different guys. Which do you normally go through in real life?
I’ve definitely been with the sweet reserved poet boy that you bring home to mom, and then I’ve also gone with the extreme player, all about image type. I think every girl would like a mix of the two. It just always depends on the guy. I don’t really have a straight across the board formula for the type of guy that I like. It always changes. I found the things that are most important to me are sincerity, integrity, and a lot of fun.

James Mardsen is a romantic comedy staple. What was it like seeing him in such a different role as Rex, the a-hole brother?
It was hilarious, because most of his roles that I’ve seen him were like The Notebook or that bridal movie with Katherine Heigl [27 Dresses]. It was really funny to see him going from being this nice sweet noble leading man into this asshole who is just hilarious. I didn’t really get to see a lot of it in action, but when I saw the film, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this guy’s hilarious’. If I were him I’d be excited at the possible opportunity to break out of that prince noble man role that he’s been doing for a while.

We’ve seen so many movies about losing your virginity. Is America obsessed with these teen-sex comedies?
It’s funny because I just read another script about the same thing: all about virginity. I guess it’s because it’s something that everyone experiences, their first time. I think it’s obviously something everyone can relate to. It’s funny, it’s awkward, it’s real, and relatable.

Sex Drive is now in theaters.
