Teen-slasher films usually involved two things?a slasher and sexy teens. Lucky for you, the upcoming All the Boys Love Mandy Lane features a smart twist of the slasher dynamic and the beautiful Whitney Able. We caught up with the rising scream queen to talk about high school and the internet forum buzz around her steamy scenes.
Tell me about All The Boys Love Mandy Lane?
It’s a teen-slasher?I don’t even know if you call it slasher, its more psychological than slasher, but there are some gory parts. The director and the DP (director of photography) did a good job making it a little different than the norm. It’s filled with things high school students have to deal with, insecurities and putting up fronts trying to be someone they’re not, and then the vulnerability that comes with that. Once you make yourself vulnerable, all kinds of things can happen.
Some people have described it as a smart teen-slasher.
It has a lot of layers that involve what it’s like to be growing up and dealing with the things that you are dealing with, A lot of the smarts come from the director and the DP, and the way that they presented it. They didn’t dumb it down, these characters are close to real but at the same time they didn’t exploit the young minded-mentality that I feel like adults can some time dumb down when making movies about young people.
This is Director Jonathan Levine’s first feature film, what was it like working with a first time director?
It’s great, the first time I met him I didn’t realize he was the director because he’s that cool. Because we were on such an intimate set out in the middle of nowhere, we were all sharing one trailer, it was a really tight budget, and we really got to know each other, which is so cool because people usually go off into their own trailers and separate from each other. We all really hung out all the time non-stop. We were in this little motel in the middle of nowhere Texas in the woods, hanging out on the porch playing guitar, just all getting to know each other.
Sounds like summer camp. Is it more fun to make movies with young people?
Yeah, it was a blast, I wish there were more films like that. It is hard when you get into lower budgets, and you know some people want to be divas, and not do those kind of projects, but for me I’d be happy eating beans out of can doing those projects all the time.
